Most Walmart stores have medium book sections, but now the company plans to enhance that with digital books. Walmart announced that it’s teamed up with Japan’s Rakuten to sell e-books, audiobooks, and Rakuten’s Kobo e-readers after this year.
“We have prolonged been a end for party including digital content—whether cinema by VUDU or the digital diversion cards we sell in the stores,” Walmart’s matter said. “E-books and audiobooks are a good further to the assortment. Working with Rakuten Kobo enables us to fast and good launch a full e-book and audiobook catalog on Walmart.com to yield the business with additional choices alongside the collection of earthy books.”
Kobo e-readers and concordant e-books are mostly renouned outward the US in countries including Canada, the UK, France, Italy, and Australia. Walmart will be Kobo’s “exclusive” US partner, definition it will be the biggest tradesman to sell Kobo e-readers in the country, along with entrance to its library of over 6 million e-books.
Customers will be means to shop for e-books and audiobooks on Walmart’s website, and the tradesman will sell e-readers in its stores and online. Walmart also plans to sell “e-book cards” in its stores, which seem to be earthy cards business can buy while selling at a Walmart store that enclose a download code for entrance to an e-book or audiobook after they leave the store.
While digital book selling will be finished on Walmart’s platforms, business will entrance purchased titles by Walmart/Kobo branded apps for desktop as good as Android and iOS. Kobo already has apps opposite these platforms, but it seems the two companies will make new apps for Walmart business in the US to use. Partnering with Rakuten for entrance to Kobo is one of the quickest and easiest ways for Walmart to enter the e-book market. While Rakuten has the possibility to grow Kobo’s comparatively tiny US footprint, Walmart has a better possibility of severe Amazon with this partnership than if the sell hulk had attempted to enter the digital book space on its own.
